This past weekend at the 78th Satoha Brown and Black Belt Workshop, we were privileged to listen to an important address from our Soke (Grand Master), Akira Sato, on the topic of compassion and providing opportunities for those in need, and in particular, children in need.
Childhood bullying continues to be a concern for many children, and is especially of concern for children of other abilities (physical and/or cognitive) as well as children living in poverty. These groups typically receive disproportionately less access to valuable skill-building and character-building activities while being more likely to be subjected to bullying and other predatory acts.
Akira Sato shared memories of his discussions with the late Ryusho Sakagami (our Soke until his passing in 1993). Ryusho Sakagami was a devout Buddhist, and by all accounts, a kindhearted and affable individual. Sakagami stated that for those in need, especially children of other abilities, we must be a spotlight in the dark. We must be supportive and provide opportunity and a safe place for people to learn and grow.
I found this message to be heartwarming and validating, as this has always been our priority at PoCo Karate. All people of all ages and abilities are always welcome and will be well supported in their training at our dojo.
